How to take screenshot on Windows
Windows offers a variety of ways to capture your screen, whether someone wants to save the whole screen, or part of it. Let’s take a look at the common techniques used to take screenshots.
Using Print Screen key
To capture the current screen simply press Print Screen, a key present on most PC keyboards. This is often abbreviated as Print Scrn, Prnt Scrn, Prt Scrn, Prt Scn, Prt Scr, Prt Sc, Pr Sc. The easiest way to take a screenshot on Windows 10 is the Print Screen (PrtScn) key. You should find it on the top-right side of your keyboard.
Pressing the Print Screen button won’t save the screenshot automatically. It will be copied to your Clipboard. To save it as an image file, you have to use another program that allows you to paste the image. We are using “Paint” app as it is embedded on windows. After opening the Paint app simply paste it and save as your desired format. You may use keyboard shortcut (CLT+V) or go to Home>Paste. You can crop, add text and a lot more from here.
Using Windows + Print Screen
If you don’t want to use any other applications this is the perfect way to capture your screen. On Windows 10, simply press the Windows key + PrtScn. It will automatically capture your screen and save the file. You will find the screenshot on: “C:\Users\UserName\Pictures\Screenshots” (C is the drive where you installed your OS).
Using Xbox Game Bar (Win+Alt+PrtScn)
The xbox Game Bar is a very useful tool of Windows 10. In addition to taking screenshots, you can also record videos. To access this application, search for “xbox Game Bar” or press Windows + G Key.
An overlay app will be opened. Usually you’ll find a Capture window in the top left corner. Click on the camera icon to capture a full-screen screenshot. You can also record a video clip by pressing the record button. You can directly take a screenshot using xbox Game Bar by pressing Win+Alt+PrtScr keys.
By default screenshots and video clips captured by the xbox Game Bar are saved to “C:\Users\UserName\Videos > Captures” (C is the drive where you installed your OS) folder.
Using Snip & Sketch tool
Snip & Sketch is another tool to take screenshot on Windows. Open the tool and click on New. A mini menu will appear at the top of your screen and you will find four options: rectangular, freeform, window, or fullscreen. Use any one of these as you want, edit if needed and save to your desired location. You may also use the shortcut Win+Shift+S key to activate Snip & Sketch tool.
Using Snipping Tool
This is one of my favorite tools on Windows which is useful to take screenshots in Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista. This tool might be available in near future as windows if focusing more on Snip & Sketch tool.
Open the Snipping Tool through the search option. You will find the same options as Snip & Sketch under the “Mode” menu. Select an option there or click on the “New” button to capture your screen. After you take your screenshot, a new window will be opened. Edit if needed and save to your desired location.
Using Third Party Tools
You may also like to use third party software like Lightshot, Greenshot, Snagit. Explore the tools if you want to get a more customizable screenshot. These tools are available to download for both Windows and Mac.
